Star Series 2009-2010 Outreach Programming Descriptions Salsamba Latin Jazz WorkshopFriday, October 23, 2009 – 3-4 pm, Albright College, Reading, PA Open to all area students free of charge! Join Salsamba on a musical exploration of the components of Latin Jazz. Included will be an overview of Cuban rhythm, clave variations, instrument and rhythm patterns including those of the conga, bongo, timbale, bass, guitar, sax and flute. Become familiar with Latin Jazz arrangements and Montuno rhythms. Presented in conjunction with Albright College. Street Beat: Bringin' It 2 the Kidz Monday, October 26, 2009 Venue: Muhlenberg High Shool Attendance limited to students of sponsoring school. http://www.streetbeat.biz/home.html Two musicians from this Los Angeles-based drumming and dancing troupe will lead an exciting, interactive assembly program that begins via exploration of the multitude of different sounds available through their stage set-up. Students will compare and contrast high/low pitch, long and short sound (sustain), soft/loud sounds (dynamics) and, through hand-on, “call and response” exercises. Through several diverse pieces performed by Street Beat, the students will compare and contrast various sound concepts. Presented in conjunction with Zoellner Center for the Arts, Lehigh University. 1 – 2 pm, Thursday, November 5, 2009 – Alvernia University Music and Health Class with invitation to the general public 6 - 7 pm, Thursday, November 5, 2009 - Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs AND Berks Classical Children’s Chorus at PAL Center for the Arts, 328 Walnut Street, Reading, PA Area students may attend the 6 pm workshop at PAL Center for the Arts free of charge. We thank the Reading Musical Foundation for their sponsorship of these workshop. Mosa will effect a realization of the power and importance of our words and other sounds including our names, using name games, rhythm and chants exercises, and exploration of the vowel sounds. Visuals will include a slide show of cymatics, pictures of dolphin and whale sounds through a cymascope, and experiments such as with sand on a drum. Students will form small groups to create and experience the power of their own soundings as individuals and in group. Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 1 – 2 pm Venue: Wyomissing High School Auditorium for 225 Jr. and Sr. High Vocal Students Attendance is limited to students of sponsoring school. Tapestry will perform for the group then teach a medieval piece, a rondeau by Adam de la Halle. The Wyomissing Senior High Camerata will sing a piece from their repertoire and the Chorale will perform a piece from their winter concert, and be coached by Tapestry. The grand final: Tapestry and 225 vocal students will perform a piece together! Presented in conjunction with Albright College. Saturday, March 13, 2010 – 5 – 6 pm Venue: MPK Chapel, Albright College, 13 th & Bern Streets, Reading, PA This workshop is open to Irish music lovers of any age. Admission is complimentary (thanks to the support of the Reading Musical Foundation!) Get up close and personal with Irish traditional music and “the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century” (Wall Street Journal). Damian McKee on accordion, multi-instrumentalist Seán Óg Graham, pianist Liam Bradley, four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and Niamh Dunne, one of Ireland's premier young voice and fiddle talents will introduce you to the finer points of traditional musical styles and instruments… with a twist! |
