Classically trained at the Conservatory in Voronezh, Russia, Trio
Voronezh are experts on Russian traditional instruments. Vladimir
Volokhin is a National Champion of the All-Russian Domra
Competition (a domra is a three-stringed, short-necked lute,
predecessor to the balalaika). Also featured are Sergei Telechev on
bajan (chromatic-button accordion with various registers changed
using the chin) and Valerie Petrushin on double-bass balalaika
(three- stringed Russian national instrument with triangular body
made of fir known for its resonant sound). Their repertoire: Bach,
Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Russian folk songs and gypsy
dance music, and so much more.
